County roads and bridges update: demolition, culvert replacements and winter preparations

County roads and bridge officials told the commission they have begun demolition work on the old Augsburg Bridge in preparation for placement of new beams expected in mid‑to‑late February and have been replacing numerous culverts ahead of planned overlays.

Roads staff reported clearing trees on the county line, replacing roughly 15–20 culvert pipes along Cedar Run and completing milling and patching work on other routes. Officials said the new culvert pipe is a heavy‑wall PVC smooth-bore product intended to flow more water and resist flame damage from yard fires compared with older black pipe. "It's a smooth bore which will flow more water," Speaker 1 said.

Staff said they are training newer employees on plow routes and turnaround spots and performing snow‑and‑ice equipment maintenance to prepare for winter operations. Work on several overlay projects was delayed by weather but crews expect to complete contractor-led paving when conditions allow.

What’s next: bridge demolition will continue and crews will await delivery/placement of new beams; winter readiness and route familiarization for new employees will continue.
