County presents Salt Lake Valley landfill FY2026 budget; city briefed for information

County and city staff presented the Salt Lake Valley Solid Waste Management Facility FY2026 budget for informational purposes. Staff said the facility's budget projects about $22,000,000 in revenues and about $20,000,000 in expenses and recommended maintaining staffing at 52 full-time equivalents. The city does not approve the county's budget but has a representative on the facility's owners'council; county staff said the budget would be considered by the county council after a public hearing in early December.

County staff outlined proposed minor rate adjustments across several cost centers to meet operational costs and noted one major contract (soil regeneration) is concluding in 2026. They said the county struck an agreement to hold Salt Lake City's city-delivery rate at $29 per ton for the coming year as a benefit to the city owners. The budget also anticipates equipment purchases funded from fund balance and a held owner distribution that splits $960,000 equally between the county and the city.

Councilmembers asked about landfill capacity and the expected date the facility will be full; county staff said the estimate has been extended toward 50 years due to efficiency changes and with Trans Jordan transfer-station operations coming online. Staff agreed to provide a fuller briefing on capacity projections in a future presentation.

The council took no formal action; the presentation was informational and the county will consider the recommended budget at its hearing.
