Students honored; student reps report on food drive, screen-time challenge, athletics and upcoming events

Board members took time at the Nov. 24 meeting to recognize students from across the district and hear a report from student representatives on recent activities and athletics.

Assistant principal Mark Bice introduced junior Quinn Ebner and read a nomination from paraprofessional Jane Thompson praising Ebner’s academic leadership and noting his state championship in mountain-bike racing. Rice Lake Middle School and elementary teachers highlighted Abby Ellis, Tucker Patrick and Anaya Sukiak for leadership, perseverance and classroom citizenship; the board said recognized students’ names will be entered in an annual drawing for Chromebooks.

Student representatives Mariana (junior class rep) and Hugo (sophomore class rep) reported on recent student-led efforts: an FFA-run Thanksgiving food drive that collected nonperishable items and donations; a school-wide screen-time challenge intended to lower average daily screen time; several small engagement activities such as apple cider day and 'high-five Friday'; and athletics updates (state swimming qualifiers and a girls’ basketball scrimmage win). They also previewed two upcoming community events: Coaches vs. Cancer on Dec. 9 and a Red Cross blood drive on Dec. 10.

The board thanked food service staff for the Thanksgiving meal effort and highlighted the meal quantities and the year-to-date meal totals published in the meeting packet. Student presenters said they plan to repeat some activities next semester and continue partnering with local businesses and organizations to expand student opportunities.

What’s next: student leaders will continue to coordinate activities; staff will continue to recognize student achievements and report back to the board on participation and outcomes.
