Board approves reclassification and moves ahead on body scanner purchase for jail

Seneca County committee members approved two public-safety actions: reclassifying one full-time deputy sheriff to a sergeant post to address overtime and approving purchase of a full-body scanner and related equipment for the county correctional facility.

The sheriff (identified by role in committee discussion) presented overtime calculations dating from Jan. 1, 2024, noting more than $100,000 in overtime costs for road sergeants and estimating the reclassification would increase payroll by roughly $6,000 but save about $25,000–$30,000 annually in overtime. The committee approved sending the reclassification to the full board.

The financing plan included $35,000 from a 2025 patrol-equipment budget line, grant funding secured through the State Dormitory Authority (an $80,000 award referenced), and state forfeiture funds.
