UN: Air strike hit a hospital in Rakhine; 2026 response plan seeks $890 million

The United Nations reported that air strikes struck a general hospital in Rakhine State, Myanmar, on Dec. 10, causing heavy civilian casualties and heightening humanitarian needs.

Spokesperson Farhan said the strikes reportedly killed more than 30 civilians and injured more than 70 people, including patients, caregivers and medical staff. He cited the World Health Organization’s tally that this marks the 67th verified attack on health facilities in Myanmar this year.

Farhan said the 2026 humanitarian needs and response plan released the previous day calls for $890,000,000 and warns that 16,200,000 people — including 5,000,000 children — will require assistance and protection next year. He said conflict and disasters have displaced an estimated 3,600,000 people and that humanitarian needs are soaring.

The UN reiterated calls for adherence to international humanitarian and human rights law and urged unrestricted humanitarian access to reach vulnerable populations. No new sanctions or Security Council measures were announced during the briefing.
