Committee affirms budget timeline, asks for audit clarity; minutes approval draws point of order

The North Kingstown Budget and Finance Advisory Committee reviewed its budget calendar and confirmed key dates for the budget process at its Dec. 1 meeting.

The chair said the next Budget & Finance meeting is Jan. 12 and the first school committee budget workshop is scheduled for Jan. 20. Members debated whether to move an earlier meeting to allow time for administration to prepare narratives and budget materials; administration argued that moving the meeting sooner would give only four days to prepare and was not realistic. Robert Jones asked whether the district audit would be available for the January meeting; staff noted the audit discussion is separate from the budget calendar and may not line up with the budget timetable.

On a procedural matter, Jones raised a point of order saying the Nov. 3 minutes "are not in accordance with state law" because absent and present members were not listed; the chair said she would update the minutes for next time but ruled against pausing approval.
