At a public hearing Dec. 2, the Norwood Board of Selectmen voted unanimously to approve the transfer of an all‑alcohol restaurant license from Old Colonial Cafe Inc. to Gemma Kitchen & Bar Inc., to be used at 171 Manhattan Street.
Attorney Steven Delamere presented the applicants and introduced proposed manager Giuseppe Trociano and partner Michelle (surname transcribed as "Jewel"). Delamere said both principals have about 25 years’ experience in the restaurant industry; Trociano trained as a chef and previously owned a restaurant in Wellesley, and Michelle has extensive bar and restaurant management experience.
Board members asked about renovation timelines, kitchen capability and any downtime; the applicants said renovations would be largely cosmetic and that the kitchen is serviceable for their concept. A representative from Castle Island Brewery voiced support for the applicants. The board opened the public hearing, heard support, closed the hearing, and then voted to approve the license transfer, approve assignment of the lease (from Old Colonial Cafe to Gemma Kitchen & Bar, Inc.), and issue a common victualler license for the premises. The board conditioned release of the license on satisfaction of any obligations owed to the Town prior to license release.
The vote included approval of the lease assignment in accordance with a lease provision cited in the record; the board also approved issuance of a common victualler license and other routine licensing matters connected with this transfer. The selectmen thanked the applicants, wished them well, and noted the approvals allow the new operators to begin renovation and prepare to open under the new ownership and management.
