Norwood Superintendent of Schools Tim Luffin presented a district update Dec. 2 focused on student‑services reforms, instructional alignment and safety operations.
Luffin said the town-funded student‑services audit led to recommendations that district leadership has already begun implementing. The district tied paraprofessional wage increases to targeted professional development, reorganized some high‑needs programs so students experience continuity within buildings, and created professional learning communities to spread successful classroom practices across schools. He said these changes were budgeted for FY26 and intended to improve service delivery for special education, English‑learner and other student‑support programs.
On accountability and data, Luffin described a midyear and end‑of‑year "State of the Union" dashboard using Mustang metrics to combine academics (reading, writing, math), behavioral and safety data and program access; a midyear report is planned for the school committee in January. He said MCAS data remain a lagging indicator and the dashboard will allow more real‑time midyear adjustments.
Luffin also reviewed career‑pathway opportunities (including recent med‑science programming), a curriculum refresh for elementary ELA and grades 5–12 math, the Coakley Middle School transition and a safety‑compliance initiative that converts large safety manuals into concise operational pullouts for staff. He noted work with town HR and ongoing budget planning; preliminary FY27 figures target a level‑service outlook and Luffin plans to present a preliminary budget to the school committee on Dec. 17.
Board members thanked Luffin for the update, asked questions about residency/verification for enrollment and about the governor’s preliminary graduation recommendation; Luffin said he would discuss graduation guidance with the commissioner and report back to the committee and constituents.
Luffin invited continued town engagement on the district’s five‑year strategic plan (kickoff in January; target completion May 2025) and said the district will continue to provide updates to the school committee and the public.
