Greer council approves adding Presidents' Day and two floating holidays to city schedule

Council approved a resolution to amend the city's holiday schedule to include Presidents' Day as a fixed holiday and two floating personal days for employees, a change staff said would bring the city's holiday count closer to other local municipalities.

Mr. Merriman said the city is "behind" peer municipalities by three set holidays and recommended adding the set day (Presidents' Day) and two floating days that employees could use at their discretion for other observances or personal needs. Staff reported the city currently provides 1 personal day and two weeks of annual leave for new employees and cited an HR/finance estimate that one paid holiday (salary plus benefits) costs roughly $66,005.30.

Council members discussed the recruitment and retention benefits versus the fiscal cost of an added paid holiday. One councilor asked whether employees had provided feedback; staff said they had heard questions from employees and that this change is intended to strengthen recruitment and retention. The resolution was received and approved on the record.
