Commissioners approve one‑year nonoperational extension for liquor license

Weston County commissioners approved a one‑year extension of nonoperational status for a liquor license on Nov. 18 after discussion about the timing of the license lapse and how state renewals apply to buyers and sellers.

Commissioner (Speaker 6) moved to grant the extension; the motion was seconded and passed on a voice vote. Commissioners reviewed how the state grants a one‑year period for license holders to become operational after a nonoperational notice, and they discussed whether a buyer who purchases a licensed business immediately after the extension would inherit any extra nonoperational time. One commissioner noted, “They have that extension from state to become operational for a year,” reflecting how state policy provides the window to become active.

Board members concluded that a license transfer to a new owner starts a new renewal period and that state rules, not the county, set the maximum nonoperational relief period. The commission voted to approve the extension without amendment and directed staff to process the paperwork.
