Canton approves two‑year animal‑sheltering contract with Michigan Humane Society

Canton Township’s Board of Trustees on Dec. 9 approved a two‑year agreement with the Michigan Humane Society to provide animal sheltering services. The contract calls for an annual flat fee of $67,500 in 2026 and $91,240 in 2027; ancillary fees may be charged as needed but purchase orders are capped at $5,000 per year. The motion included a required amendment to increase the 2026 police budget by $17,500 to cover the township’s share.

Clerk Seegrest moved the contract and Trustee Borninski supported it; staff said the Michigan Humane Society is the only viable regional option that meets Canton’s standards of care and is increasing contractual costs to cover shelter improvements. Mr. Johnson (staff) explained the larger increase in year two is tied to facility renovations and related costs the provider is incurring.

The motion passed with all in favor. Directors noted staff will manage ancillary fees through purchase‑order controls and that the Police Department requested the renewal to maintain continuity of animal sheltering services.
