Cathedral City reports instability with newly installed 'Ozone' sculpture at library

City staff told the Public Arts Commission that the donated sculpture 'Ozone' by Craig French has been installed at the Cathedral City Library but that the piece is not fully stable on its mounting. The library placed stanchions and signage around the sculpture and staff will consult Public Works and the artist about securing the work or removing it if it cannot be made safe.

A staff presenter said the base is secured but there is “some instability of the statue itself,” and expressed concern that a bumped or falling sculpture could injure a visitor. Staff said they will inspect the installation, contact the artist and report back to the commission with a solution, and plan to order a plaque with the artist’s information once the piece is secured.

Next steps: staff follow-up with Public Works and the artist to secure the sculpture; possible retrofit or removal if the work cannot be safely mounted; plaque and artist information to be provided to the commission.
