MADERA — Councilwoman Elsa Mejia was honored at the Madera City Council meeting tonight after receiving the Mexican government’s Mexicanos Distinguidos (Mexicana Distinguidas) award, city officials and visiting dignitaries said.
Mayor Gallegos and council members presented a city proclamation recognizing Mejia for ‘‘outstanding contributions, leadership and dedication to uplifting the Mexican community in the Central Valley,’’ according to the text read at the meeting by a council member. The proclamation notes Mejia’s work to strengthen cultural and civic ties in Madera.
Representatives from the Mexican Consulate in Fresno and an assembly member attending the meeting congratulated Mejia, highlighting her status as the first woman of Mexican indigenous (Mixteca) origin elected to the Madera City Council and praising her advocacy on issues including dignified housing and representation for indigenous communities. Arturo Martinez, a district representative for state Senator Anna Caballero, presented a ceremonial certificate from the state and praised Mejia’s public service as ‘‘dedication, integrity, and a commitment to uplifting the community you represent.’'
The consulate representative noted that the Mexican government’s Mexicanos Distinguidos program recognizes Mexicans living abroad who demonstrate professional achievement and service. The consul’s remarks linked the award to broader efforts to promote feminist public policy and indigenous advancement in Mexico.
Mejia thanked colleagues and attendees. Council members across the dais offered congratulations during later council reports, and the mayor closed the ceremony before the meeting recessed for refreshments.
The recognition was ceremonial; no council action or funding was associated with the presentation. The council reconvened and continued its regular agenda after a 15‑minute recess.
