CVB reviews Frontier Village reenactment report and flags lodging and expense questions

The City of Denison CVB advisory board on Thursday reviewed a post-event report from Frontier Village for a September historic reenacting event and raised questions about the event’s financial outcome and documentation.

Board members noted the report showed roughly $1,900 in receipts against about $5,000 in event expenses, with much of the spending tied to signage, concessions and transport of the event tank. Speaker 4 said some line items appeared to be services or transportation costs rather than marketing assets, and Speaker 3 described the post-report as more detailed than earlier forms.

Speaker 1 said turnover in the applicant’s leadership complicated reporting: “about 3 weeks before this report was due was when Aaron had stepped down,” which staff said affected who provided instructions for the post-event submission. The board also discussed whether reenactors—many in town multiple days—stayed overnight locally and whether that lodging could be documented to show tourism impact.

Speaker 5 raised that reenactors had been told by a previous executive director they could stay in Denison during the event, calling that an operational issue the board should note going forward. Board members asked staff (Jordan) to follow up with the applicant if Frontier Village applies for future funding to clarify allowable expenses and documentation requirements.

There was no formal vote on the Frontier Village report; board members said staff would work with applicants on any future applications and reporting standards before authorizing further hot‑tax or grant awards.
