Rhinebeck approves Beekman Arms request to remove five honey locust trees; replacements planned

The Village of Rhinebeck board approved an application from the Beekman Arms owners to remove five honey locust trees along Route 9 to accommodate sidewalk repairs and improvements, with a requirement to replace the removed trees as specified in the application and planning board site plan.

Rick, speaking for the tree commission, said commissioners reviewed the site and recommended removal because construction and sidewalk work would otherwise damage the trees; the application included an invoice showing replacement trees have been sourced. The replacements are described as larger hybrid elms (approximately 3–4 inches in caliper at chest level) intended to match the scenic character of the area.

Board members noted the planning board’s amended site plan includes conditions tied to planting timing: if the new trees are not planted before year‑end the planning board’s allowance for removals is limited. The village board approved the tree‑removal application while acknowledging the planning board’s authority over timing and reinspection requirements.
