Wilson Walker, junior class president at Muhlenberg County High School, asked the Muhlenberg County Board of Education on Tuesday to establish a nonvoting student representative on the board.
“At MCHS, our herd stands above the line,” Walker said in public comment, urging the board to “introduce a non voting student representative to the Muhlenberg County Board of Education.” He said the role would bring student perspectives to board decision‑making and prepare youth for civic leadership.
Walker cited examples from nearby districts and pointed to a 2020 executive order by Gov. Andy Beshear and pending state legislation (House Bill 626) as context that has encouraged student representation at higher levels of government. He said he was not requesting an immediate vote but asked for the opportunity to work with board members to craft a formal proposal that would define eligibility, selection, and expectations.
Board members did not take action on the request at the meeting. Walker told the board he plans to return with a formal proposal at a future meeting if given the chance.
The board did not debate or vote on the proposal during the session; Walker’s remarks were recorded during the public comment portion of the meeting.
