Chair Sandoval described recent meetings with Commission on the State of Hate leadership and recommended joint work on community engagement next year. Sandoval said the commission plans two upcoming community meetings in Southern California and that topics will include youth, social media and increased targeting of elected officials.
"My hope is that it's in early 2024," Chair Sandoval said when describing timing for a proposed joint meeting with the commission.
Council member Hong moved that the council hold a joint meeting with the Commission on the State of Hate in 2024 to discuss collaboration and concrete follow-up steps; a second was recorded. The council voted by roll call and all present members voted 'Aye.'
Council members discussed potential sites for joint convenings (including Riverside and Imperial counties) to reach underrepresented communities and considered producing concise memoranda summarizing trends from the State of Hate hotline for policymaker use.
The council asked staff to work with Commission on the State of Hate contacts and report back at the next council meeting with proposed dates and a plan for a hybrid (in-person and remote) convening.
