Unidentified Speaker 2, identified in the meeting transcript as Parks & Recreation staff, told the board that construction and renovation projects across Farmers Branch are moving forward at differing paces.
"They estimated completion of the...restroom will hopefully be done, next month," Unidentified Speaker 2 said about work at John Burke Park and cautioned the schedule depends on weather. The board was told Venue 1842, the event center at the Historical Park, is progressing quickly and has an "estimated completion date [in] spring 2024," with branding and reservations already being finalized.
The parks update covered a range of other projects and timelines. Unidentified Speaker 2 said the Branch connection reopened and that bids opened the same day; staff expects construction to begin in late 2024 or early 2025 depending on bid results. Squire Park’s renovation, including a proposed splash pad, remains on hold but has "potential funding for fiscal year 2024–25," with estimated completion in 2025 if funded.
On Mercer Park, Unidentified Speaker 2 told the board the item is "on hold" because the city needs the developer to make more progress before work resumes. Board members later discussed a mound of dirt on the site that must be moved before further construction can proceed; one member said moving it is constrained by wind conditions and neighbor impacts.
The board was also notified that the Aquatic Center will be closed the week of Thanksgiving for annual repairs and maintenance and "will open back up to the public on the 25th," Unidentified Speaker 2 said.
Separately, Unidentified Speaker 2 confirmed a groundbreaking that day for a new multi-sport facility adjacent to the Star Center. Under the agreement described, the city will build the facility and the STARS organization will operate it; planned uses include indoor pickleball and select volleyball and basketball programs. Parks staff said the facility is expected to help manage overflow for major tournaments and boost tourism and hotel usage.
Why it matters: the update shows a mix of near-term completions and projects delayed by developer progress or funding availability. Residents who use John Burke Park, the Aquatic Center or venues scheduled for renovation should expect brief service interruptions and staggered openings over the next 6–12 months.
What’s next: staff said they will provide firm dates when contractors confirm schedules and will present bid results for the Branch connection to council once available.
