City special events staff told the Parks & Recreation Board they are consolidating and reassigning several signature events after 2023 changes reduced the department’s event calendar and revealed capacity constraints.
"We went from 6 and [drive‑ins] down to 2," Jeff, a member of the special events team, explained while outlining decisions made after a council review earlier in 2023. Staff said construction at the Grove and projected multiyear Denton Drive work — including lane reductions and added bike lanes — have affected parking and circulation plans for large events, prompting the city to relocate or suspend some Grove‑based activities.
Staff confirmed that Halloween in the Park and some other major holiday programming will be run by the special events team starting in 2024–25 to centralize event expertise and reduce the operational toll on individual facility managers. The department also plans to maintain lower ticketing or donation fees for nonresidents where appropriate and reported stronger branding and staging for the Christmas event at the historical park.
Board members raised neighbors’ concerns about traffic and tree removal connected to Squire Park‑area improvements and noted the need to be cautious about moving festival dates — particularly for events that rely on touring talent such as Bluegrass. Jeff and other staff also cited homelessness and safety issues near the Grove as complicating factors for staging events there.
Staff said they will continue to share schedules with council and return with exact dates after further coordination with the Grove construction team, event contractors and public safety partners.
