Parks staff announced the temporary closure of the Oranguturf astroturf field after repeated vandalism and misuse, and the board discussed short‑ and medium‑term options to protect facilities and neighborhood users.
Mark (parks staff) described multiple incidents in which individuals forcibly entered fenced areas, pried electrical boxes and ripped wiring. He said crews welded temporary fence repairs Tuesday and shut the facility until heavy‑duty panels and electrical repairs are completed: “We have shut it down… we shut it down yesterday.” Staff reported police were called for trespass but said recurring overnight break‑ins and groups using vehicle lights to continue play are ongoing operational challenges.
Board members and staff discussed options including a reservation system that would unlock the facility only for registered users, resident‑only access, and restrictions on team usage where grant or CIP funding might restrict exclusive use. Grant coordinator Cheyenne is reviewing funding history at staff’s request to determine any programmatic restrictions tied to original funding.
Separately, multiple board members raised concern about safety at the dog park after two reported incidents involving aggressive dogs and rapid departures that made identifying owners difficult. Staff said they have obtained camera quotes in the $10,000–$30,000 range but that wiring, data port infrastructure and software add to the cost. Staff recommended calling 911 for attacks and will continue to evaluate surveillance options.
Next steps: staff will complete repairs to Oranguturf, consult the grant coordinator on funding/restrictions, evaluate a reservation system and return options to the board; staff will also continue to assess camera feasibility for high‑risk park locations.
