PUCN pipeline safety update: excavation activity up, Nevada ranks low for gas-damage ratio

Paul McGuire, engineering manager with the commission's Pipeline Safety Division, presented an informational update on excavation and gas-damage metrics. McGuire said 2023 was a record excavation year for Nevada and that ticket counts for excavation work are about 20% higher so far this year.

McGuire noted Nevada recorded one of the lowest damage ratios nationally and, with one fewer damage, would have been first; he praised the state's Pipeline Safety Division and the One Call program for contributing to low damage counts and encouraged excavators to exercise caution. He also noted the presence of out-of-state contractors from Utah and Texas and urged stronger attention to protecting infrastructure.

Chair Williamson thanked McGuire and commended the division for its work. Commissioner Cordova echoed appreciation for pipeline safety staff and the One Call program.
