Local food council and teachers expand Growing Gardeners curriculum across RSU 9 schools

Laura Haft, who works with the Greater Franklin Food Council, and teachers from Cascade Brook and other schools presented the district with a multi-school school-garden program tied to standards and hands-on lessons. The initiative uses a curriculum called Growing Gardeners, aligned to K–8 standards, that includes 20 lessons per grade band and extension activities in language arts, math, science and social studies.

Haft said the food council has worked with local partners to supply soil, seeds and donated materials and that volunteer and community partners—such as Rustic Root Farms and Living Acres—have helped supply materials and field-trip experiences. Cascade Brook teacher Sarah described a hands-on cycle of planting, journaling and harvesting; teachers use lessons that connect literacy, nutrition and science. The presenters reported reaching hundreds of students during the fall and spring seasons and described summer-program integration and collaboration with vocational programs to build garden infrastructure.

Board members expressed strong support and asked about sustainability and possible financial support. Haft said the food council intends to continue supporting the program but may request district funding or pay-for-service arrangements for expanded reach. The board asked the presenters to return with more detailed cost estimates and proposals for district support and in-kind contributions.

The board voted to extend the meeting to allow the presentation to continue and asked administration to consider potential budget or in-kind support when the presenters return with a proposal.
