HDC orders move-offs for several noncontributing structures, urges relocation over demolition

The Nantucket Historic District Commission on Jan. 7 authorized move-off or demolition where commissioners judged structures noncontributing or where relocation is feasible.

On Tripp Drive the Commission approved a move-off/demolition for a two-story gable-box structure (circa 1978), with one commissioner abstaining because of a personal connection; the board recorded a 4–0 decision with an abstention. At 81 Paco the Commission considered two cottages: one midcentury modern deck house the board described as historically significant to Nantucket’s midcentury inventory (Acorn Deckhouse-type) and a second cottage for which a prospective recipient exists. Commissioners voted to require move-offs rather than demolition where practicable and directed applicants to pursue ConCom approvals or relocations as needed.

Commissioners emphasized that when a structure is moveable, relocation is preferred to demolition, both to preserve architectural fabric and to reduce construction waste. The Commission also approved a wharf utility building’s door reconfiguration (two new single egress doors with panic hardware) required by updated electrical separation — but asked that new doors match the existing painted finish and casing details.

Next steps: Applicants were instructed to document move-off schedules, seek ConCom approvals where required, and report back with timelines. The board requested that staff track move-off outcomes and confirm whether structures are re‑used on other properties.
