Commissioners debate $2.313 million hospital-district funding request; action moved to June 21 for fuller backup

Nueces County Commissioners on June 7 discussed a proposed request to the Nueces County Hospital District for up to $2,313,000 to cover public‑health services for fiscal year 2023–24, including funding for the health department, vector control, two staff stationed at the Calderon building, and a mobile clinic.

Commissioner Gonzales moved to approve submitting the request; several commissioners said they had not received adequate written backup in advance of the meeting. One commissioner criticized the agenda package as ‘‘horrible backup’’ and argued the public and the full court should have more time to review the numbers before voting.

County staff and the judge said the figures were discussed in prior meetings with the hospital district and that the $2.313 million figure represents the cap the hospital district would be asked to cover (roughly $2.0 million for core health department and vector control functions plus smaller items). Staff said they would prepare clearer written backup and bring the item back so the court and public could review it before the hospital‑district board meets on June 26.

Given the concern about public notice and posted materials, the court voted to reconsider the initial approval and then adopted a motion to move consideration of the funding request to its June 21 meeting with the requested documentation and an explanation of line items for review. Commissioners emphasized the county policy that agenda backup be available to the entire court and the public in advance of decisions that commit funds or request external funding.

What happens next: County staff said they will prepare a full financial explanation and backup for the June 21 meeting and coordinate with the hospital district in advance of that board’s June 26 meeting.
