Nueces County introduces new public health director and expands mobile clinic outreach

The Nueces County Commissioners Court on Jan. 18 introduced Dr. Fawzia Khan as the new director of the Corpus Christi — Nueces County Public Health District and heard a staff plan to expand outreach in rural communities. Dr. Khan said her priorities are “better health outcomes, efficient use of taxpayer dollars, and building a strong workforce,” and thanked county leaders for support of a county mobile clinic that recently provided screenings and immunizations in Bishop and Port Aransas.

The briefing outlined two near-term actions: continued deployment of the mobile clinic to rural locations and reopening a Robstown satellite clinic that will offer public-health services twice weekly. Assistant director Dr. Dante Gonzalez said the department is partnering with colleges to recruit nursing students and build a local clinical workforce after staffing gaps exposed by the pandemic.

Commissioners thanked the new director and encouraged continued coordination with county departments. The public-health update was presented as an informational item; no formal vote was required. Staff said they will return to the court with implementation details for the Robstown site and continue applying for grants to support mobile services.
