The Beaufort County Board of Education Executive Committee met virtually on May 13, 2024, and approved the draft agenda for the board’s May 21 business meeting, the chair said. "We are meeting to set the agenda," the chair said as the meeting began.
Committee members voted by voice to approve the agenda and to accept the April 29 committee minutes. An unnamed member moved to approve the agenda and another member seconded; the committee responded "aye" on a voice vote. Unidentified Speaker 4 moved to approve the April 29 minutes and the chair seconded; those minutes were also approved by voice vote.
Why it matters: the May 21 business meeting will be held at Hilton Head Island High School with executive session scheduled at 5 p.m. and public session at 6 p.m., the chair said. The committee added several items to the May 21 agenda while setting it: legal advice regarding pending and settled claims, privileged communication concerning a workers’ compensation claim, architectural amendments for Hilton Head Island High School, and a homeschool “option 1” item labeled for executive session. A committee member also requested a brief update on a pending custodial contract, which staff said should be short but may require clarification.
Superintendent-designated staff signaled several informational items that will appear under the superintendent’s report. Doctor Rodriguez (staff) told the committee the district will bring back information on cell-phone policy options but cautioned that the board should not expect a ready-to-vote plan at that time: "We're gonna bring back information... not that there's a full blown plan coming back with... a ready to vote," she said, noting that parental surveys and additional fact-finding will likely be necessary.
Budget and logistics: the agenda lists the 2024–25 budget certification as the only board-business action item. The chair also read items under "points of celebration," including the April Student of the Month, the South Carolina Art Education Association Youth Art Month winner, spring sports awards and recognition of MC Riley Elementary School teachers. The committee selected Wednesday, May 29, at 5 p.m. via Zoom to set the agenda for the June 11 meeting.
Next steps: the board’s May 21 meeting remains scheduled at Hilton Head Island High School (executive session 5 p.m., public session 6 p.m.). Staff said they will try to provide any new information on a property referred to as the Lubbocka property before the May 21 meeting; if new material arrives, the committee may alter the executive-session start time.
The committee adjourned by unanimous consent.
