The Idaho Senate convened its first regular session of the 68th Legislature on Jan. 6 with routine opening business: roll call, a prayer from the senate chaplain, presentation of the colors, and the national anthem.
Senate chaplain Doug Armstrong led the morning prayer, invoking guidance for Governor Brad Little as he prepared to deliver the State of the State address. After the prayer, the sergeant at arms, identified in the transcript as Sarah Jane McDonald, brought in the Idaho State Police honor guard to post the colors and led senators in the Pledge of Allegiance. Guest Hallie Farmer sang the national anthem.
The presiding officer appointed committees to notify both the governor and the House that the senate was organized and ready to conduct business. Committee members named in these appointments included Sen. Groh, Sen. Ziederfeld, Sen. Ward Engle King, Sen. Burton, Sen. Lenny and Sen. Taylor. A committee report stated the delegation met with the governor and reported she had 'work of wisdom' to offer.
Chamber announcements included an informational meeting on the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) and required workplace and ethics training for senators, with efforts noted to duplicate chairman's training where schedule conflicts exist. The senate recessed to attend the scheduled joint session for the governor’s address and later voted to adjourn until 11 a.m. on Jan. 7, 2025.
These opening items were largely ceremonial and procedural; no policy debate or amendments were recorded during the opening proceedings.
