House adopts adjournment resolution, receives governor and adjourns until June 17

The Vermont House adopted Joint Resolution JRS 56 on Saturday, setting the conditions for final adjournment of the General Assembly and reconvening on June 17, 2024 at 10 a.m. if the governor returns vetoed bills after adjournment.

After adopting the resolution by voice vote, the House approved a motion directing the clerk to inform the Senate the House has completed its business under JRS 56 and appointed a committee of six to escort and inform the governor that the House is ready to adjourn. The appointed House members were read into the record by the chair.

The sergeant at arms presented Governor Philip B. Scott to the chamber. In brief remarks, the governor thanked legislators for their service, referenced recovery from the pandemic and the 2023 floods, and urged continued focus on fundamentals and affordable progress in implementing the budget.

"We just wanted to do some good," Governor Philip B. Scott said, praising volunteers and local leaders who responded to the floods and urging members to continue steady work on shared goals.

Following the governor's address, Member from Newfane moved that the House adjourn until Monday, June 17, 2024 at 10 a.m. (or until necessary to consider any bills returned by the governor). The motion passed by voice vote and the House stood adjourned.
