A Member from Shelburne introduced constituent Lisonbee Precourt and the Vermont Association of Diabetes Educators, who were seated in the gallery and have a display in the card room. The member described the group's interdisciplinary composition (nurses, nurse practitioners, dietitians, pharmacists, social workers and other health professionals) and cited statistics presented to the chamber: “Over 45,000 Vermonters live with diabetes and average medical expenses are almost 3 times more for residents with diabetes than those who do not have this disease,” and recent direct medical expenses were described as nearly 400,000,000 (as stated on the floor). Members were invited to meet the group and learn more.
Additionally, the House heard by title JRH11, a joint resolution urging the establishment of a national human rights institution in the United States introduced by Representative Christie of Hartford; the resolution was treated as a bill and referred to the Committee on General and Housing pursuant to House Rule 52.
What happens next: The House will forward JRH11 to the Committee on General and Housing for consideration; the visiting educators' display remained available for members to view.
