The Vermont House read HCR 142 on Jan. 30, recognizing Jan. 27, 2024 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day in Vermont and directing the secretary of state to send a copy of the resolution to the Vermont Holocaust Memorial.
The floor recitation of the resolution recounts the organized annihilation carried out by Nazi Germany during World War II and notes the United Nations General Assembly's designation of the date in recognition of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. The resolution text as read on the floor cites the Anti-Defamation League's report on a rise in antisemitic incidents between Oct. 7 and Dec. 7, 2023.
The Member from Worcester reflected on the personal and civic importance of the observance, described family refugee history and the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, and introduced Heidi Fishman, a board member of the Vermont Holocaust Memorial and a descendant of Holocaust survivors. The Member from Worcester said the Vermont Holocaust Memorial and its educator workshops are important to ensuring students across the state learn about the Holocaust.
The resolution was presented under the consent calendar and adopted by the House and Senate as noted on the floor record.
