During opening announcements, the Member from Burlington introduced guests connected to the Nov. 25, 2023 shooting in Burlington in which three Palestinian American students were shot near the member's home. The member named the students as Hashim Aretani, Kannan Abdulhammed and Tazeen Ahmed and described their recovery and the family members present in the gallery.
The member praised the resilience and character of one student who continues to recuperate from a severe spinal cord injury and introduced several relatives by name and school affiliation, including Elizabeth Price (a Vermont resident who works in international development and has ties to Tetra Tech ARD), Adam Aratani (a Ramallah Friends School eighth-grader), Wesley Price and William Price (students attending Burlington schools), and Kimberly Price, who was staying with the injured student at the time of the crime. The member asked the chamber to rise and welcome the visitors to "The People's House."
The introduction was made as a guest recognition; no formal legislative action was taken in relation to the visit at this time.
