At its annual meeting, Greater Iowa City staff and leaders outlined a set of 2025 priorities focused on place‑based economic development, workforce supports and business services designed to boost neighborhood reinvestment and expand housing and transit options.
Jenny Wunderlich (PSC Distribution) summarized the organization's clarified mission: "to elevate businesses, invest in strategic initiatives and advocate for economic resiliency." Nancy Bird and staff then described a countywide data digest led by Evan Doyle that the organization will use to target efforts; the digest notes Johnson County has more than 3,500 businesses, a labor force over 86,000 and a county population of roughly 153,000.
Greater IC announced three non‑regulatory strategic investment districts intended to deliver technical services and place‑based support: Cherry Street in North Liberty, 5th Street in Coralville, and the Sycamore area of Iowa City. Staff said these districts were chosen with municipal partners and innovation councils and aim to increase business investment, housing supply, walkability and neighborhood services.
On mobility, Greater IC said it is supporting a "pop up metro" commuter train pilot on the Grandick Short Line Rail. The proposal under discussion with the regional metropolitan planning organization envisages a three‑year leased pilot that would use modular train kits, charging infrastructure and platforms; staff said the pilot is meant to gather real‑time data and "could move forward in months, not years." Katie Gerlach is identified as a lead champion for the effort.
The organization also announced program and staffing moves to support businesses and workforce needs: a Merge Business Resource Center (drop‑in co‑working, technical assistance), business education programs, and the hire of Michael Chen to advance a wage enhancement program for child care professionals. Greater IC emphasized that small businesses make up the majority of firms in the county and that housing, town attraction and childcare were top priorities raised in recent business surveys.
Leaders closed this portion of the program by inviting members to engage in charettes, innovation council work and coalition building to advance the initiatives in 2025.
