The Vermont Senate on April 26 unanimously adopted SR 18, a resolution reaffirming the importance of the friendship between the United States and the Republic of China (Taiwan) and between Vermont and Taiwan, and expressing support for Taiwan’s greater participation in multinational bodies.
The Government Operations Committee reporter framed the resolution as celebrating long-standing commercial and cultural ties, noting trade figures cited in the text: U.S.–Taiwan two-way goods trade and Vermont’s agricultural exports to Taiwan were recited as context for the resolution. The committee report recited background including reference to the Taiwan Relations Act and recommended the floor adopt the language of the legislative council’s resolution.
SR 18 directs the Secretary of the Senate to send copies to U.S. and Taiwanese officials named in the resolution and supports establishing a memorandum of understanding to expand educational exchange between Vermont and Taiwan.
The Senate ordered the 3rd reading, took up the measure and passed it by voice vote; the resolution will be transmitted according to the directions in the text.
