During the public-comment portion of the Aug. 14 meeting several community members spoke about curriculum, school conditions and unresolved student issues.
Bob Day (Days Asphalt Painting) raised facilities concerns at Westside, noting cracking pavement and grass growth in the parking lot and asked the board to have Ms. Wright (COO) follow up. Mara Coleman, a retired teacher, offered to volunteer and recalled past work to infuse African and African-American history into curriculum; she said district academic scores showed room for improvement. Loubetta Kendall called for equitable, high-quality education for all students and asked that teachers and counselors be properly credentialed.
Robert Clark described representing a student who he said continues to suffer following an incident at Westside, said he had provided the student's statement to district staff, and referenced "Senate Bill 327" while questioning the board about appointed-member authority and term expiration. Dr. Michaela Spanberger urged greater transparency, noting minutes were missing from the district website and asking that policy-language changes be clearer to the public.
Board members responded on several items (for example, asking Mr. Day to provide contact details to Ms. Wright), and officials said personnel and individual-staff complaints must be handled through building principals or appropriate administrators rather than being pursued orally at board meetings.
Next steps: staff to follow up with Mr. Day and the public record/website questions. The board reiterated the process for personnel-related complaints and said those matters are referred to administrators for resolution before appeal.
