The Beatrice Public Schools Board voted Feb. 12 to approve the 2024–25 school calendar and also approved installation of a cornerstone for the new elementary building, while taking time to recognize staff and a long‑time contractor.
After a motion and second, Jackie reviewed calendar changes designed to ease the transition into the new elementary: staggered student start dates so smaller groups can orient to the building, additional early‑release teacher collaboration days and several full professional‑development days. The calendar includes a built‑in snow makeup day on April 21 and reserves extra minutes/days across levels (the high school shows 11 extra days, the middle school 16 and elementary approximately 17) to meet state minute requirements. "The 2024–25 school calendar is approved as presented," the meeting chair stated after a voice vote.
The board also approved the Beatrice Masons’ request to install a cornerstone in the new elementary and tentatively scheduled a ceremony for July 27. Mister Alexander said the cornerstone is "a symbol of the masons of the state of Nebraska" and described local participation in the event.
At the start of the meeting Doctor Nielsen introduced Kelly Carpenter as February Employee of the Month, praising her versatility across duties and summer school work. The board also recognized Kirk Shinn of Johnson Controls as Business Friend of the Month for long service maintaining HVAC and other systems; Shinn is retiring from Johnson Controls in the coming months.
The meeting closed after the administrator reported on a positive Cognia review of the high school and the board set its next regular meeting for March 12, 2024.
