The Danville Public Schools Board of Education used its regular meeting to honor two outgoing board members, highlight student achievements and recognize community fundraising efforts.
Board members and community speakers praised Doctor Philip Campbell for 12 years of service to the board and local schools. A family member said the board will "lose" Campbell’s counsel and described his commitment to young people; several board colleagues echoed that praise and invited him to stay engaged in the district. Campbell, who said he did not run for another term so he would not "spread myself too thin," thanked volunteers who helped serve hundreds on Thanksgiving and said "it is extremely imperative for our students to be, college and career ready."
The board also recognized Charles McWilliams for his four years on the board and 36 years in education. Family members and colleagues described his long career and dedication to students; the board gave public thanks and applause.
Reginald Purvis, director of Fine Arts Instructional Support, presented the George Washington High School Marching Eagles and cataloged a string of honors the band earned this season, including multiple marching-contest awards and the program’s first "superior" rating at the state marching assessment. Purvis said the group served as "ambassadors to our city and community" and thanked staff and student leaders for their commitment.
The board also noted that the district’s United Way campaign raised more than $20,000; eight schools met campaign targets and several campaign managers received certificates and gift-card awards. Organizers announced winners of the district’s fourth annual holiday card contest and named the monetary awards for first, second and third place.
During public comment, a community member asked the district to consider naming a new gymnasium or sports complex at George Washington High School for coach Harry James Johnson, citing his career record and community service. The superintendent said staff would follow up with the speaker.
The recognitions segment concluded with reminders about upcoming concerts and winter break dates and with board members offering holiday best wishes to staff, students and families.
