Laredo ISD board approves midyear budget review as district prepares for tighter state funding

The Laredo ISD Board of Trustees voted March 26 to approve the midyear review of the 2023–24 annual budget, a routine but required checkpoint as the district approaches the 2024–25 budget cycle.

Finance staff presented the midyear review and reminded trustees that the district — as an early‑adoption fiscal district — must adopt a budget by June 30. Trustees and the superintendent emphasized ongoing efforts to manage constraints and to prepare for a possible shortfall if state funding does not materialize. "We are gonna be going into a budget chill," the superintendent said, noting staff discussions about staffing formulas and savings achieved through attrition.

Board members were reminded of a budget workshop scheduled for March 27 to begin more detailed revenue and appropriation planning. Trustees asked for assurances on staffing projections and for follow‑up detail at the next meeting; the motion to approve the midyear review carried by voice vote.

Why it matters: The midyear review frames assumptions used in next year’s budget (staffing levels, program funding and capital priorities). Trustees flagged enrollment declines since the pandemic and the potential for continued state funding uncertainty.
