Laredo ISD’s Board of Trustees recognized three JROTC commanding officers and several students during its May 16 meeting, presenting plaques to the instructors and highlighting recent student accomplishments.
Lieutenant Colonel Benny Fagan, Sergeant Major Juan Hernandez and Sergeant First Class Conrado Martinez were honored for their combined service and for leading JROTC programs at Nixon, Martin and Sigaroa high schools. “On behalf of all three of our programs, we appreciate all that our board and all that our district do in support of our programs,” Lieutenant Colonel Benny Fagan said.
Trustees presented plaques citing the instructors’ work in providing “an outstanding program, curriculum, values, leadership development and community activities that enrich the academic experience for Laredo ISD students.” The district noted the instructors now teach cadets skills ranging from civics and land navigation to leadership and community service, and that cadets must meet academic and behavioral standards to participate.
The board also spotlighted student achievements across arts, academics and athletics. Nixon High School’s one-act play cast received recognition for regional honors at the UIL contest; individual students and technicians earned all-region and honorable-mention distinctions. The district announced legacy scholarship awards totaling $40,000 to five juniors, and named several students of the month from multiple schools.
Sofia Sandoval, a Nixon High School athlete, was recognized for qualifying for the UIL 5A state track meet. The board said Sandoval placed eighth in the 3,200-meter run and set the Nixon High School girls’ record in the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 14 seconds.
Community donations were highlighted as well: representatives of VFW posts and Martin High alumni raised funds for graduating seniors’ caps and gowns, and a $500 presentation to Martin High School was announced.
The recognitions concluded with a short video highlighting the district chess tournament and thanks from trustees to staff and community partners. The board’s recognitions and presentations were ceremonial; no policy actions resulted from the recognitions portion of the meeting.
