The Laredo ISD Board began its April 18 meeting with several recognitions. Trustees presented a plaque to Corporal Liz Edwards, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and graduate of Nixon High School, praising her military service and local advocacy. “It offered me structure, courage … to do things with honor,” Corporal Edwards said when reflecting on her service.
The board also recognized winners of the Webb County 'Go to Vote Democracy' essay contest, multiple Students of the Month from middle and high schools, mariachi ensembles that earned sweepstakes awards, high school soccer teams advancing to area and regional playoffs, a HOSA competitor qualified for nationals, and a state champion robotics team. Principals, coaches and sponsors were invited forward for photos.
Athletic Director Sylvia Barrera announced her intent to retire effective June 30, 2024. Barrera reviewed 41 years with the district, including 14 years as athletic director, and outlined leadership initiatives that strengthened athletics alignment from elementary through high school. “As I transition into this new chapter of my life, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for the support, guidance, mentoring and continued investment into my leadership growth during my tenure at Laredo ISD,” she said.
Trustees praised Barrera’s contributions and said the district will plan a celebration before her departure. Board members and the superintendent also highlighted upcoming events including scholarship nights, a press conference on a forestry grant, and a Texas electric school bus demonstration at the PAC.
What’s next: A district celebration for Barrera will be scheduled; student and fine‑arts awards and other spring activities are planned through the end of the school year.
