The Everett City Council reconsidered several board reappointments so members could be questioned and the public could have more transparency about appointees’ residency and qualifications.
The clerk initially read reappointments to the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Disability Commission (items 5, 6 and 10) and a first vote recorded favorable action on several reappointments (a recorded 6–4 split on an early vote). Following concerns from multiple councilors about automatic reappointments without the opportunity to ask questions, members moved to reconsider those votes, and the council voted to bring the items back before the body. The council then voted to refer the reappointments to the Committee on Legislative Affairs, requesting that appointees attend the committee meeting or provide resumes and residency verification as applicable.
Why it matters: Some boards and commissions legally require residency as a qualification; councilors said it is important to verify that appointees meet residency requirements and to give the public and council a chance to hear from nominees before confirmation.
What’s next: Items 5, 6 and 10 were referred to the Committee on Legislative Affairs with requests that appointees attend and bring proof of residency or submit resumes if unable to attend.
