The East Penn School District board on Monday recognized the Emmaus High School field hockey team as the 2023 state champions and gave special recognition to head coach Buttshaven for a record-setting career.
"We as the superintendent on behalf of administration, the school board, and really just the entire East Penn community, we wanted to invite you and appropriately recognize you for being the 2023 state champs," Superintendent Doctor Campbell said, introducing the team and praising their accomplishments in athletics, academics and community service.
Coach Davin thanked the board and introduced assistant coach Allison Hawes and the players by class, highlighting the senior leaders including Emma Carey, Adrianna Alvaro, Autumn Held, Jordan Pohl, Sarah Schaffer and Malia Webber. The administration said the board had received proclamations for the team from several local state representatives.
Campbell also noted Coach Buttshaven s long record: 48 seasons as a coach, multiple district titles and state championships, and recent induction into the National High School Hall of Fame. The administration said the coach recently reached the milestone of 1,000 career wins.
Board members and audience members applauded the students and coaches; the board then moved on to the scheduled business items.
The team and coach received formal recognition and proclamations from the board at the start of the meeting, and the district plans to maintain community acknowledgements of their season.
