The board reviewed a first reading of multiple policy items including a draft student ID-card policy and a proposed policy to document consensus taken between meetings.
On student ID cards, administrators said the policy would initially target secondary schools and could later expand to elementary levels. Staff provided an estimated implementation cost "right around $40,000" for cards and two printers to serve secondary students and staff; administrators noted the cost could be refined. Board members raised logistics (replacement costs and lanyard safety), whether cards could double as meal or point-of-sale identifiers and whether safety-and-security funds could cover startup costs. Administration said badges would be printed centrally and distributed to buildings and that breakaway lanyards were planned to reduce hazards.
On governance, directors discussed a proposed consensus policy to call all nine board members when time-sensitive decisions arise between public meetings and to read any consensus into the public record at the next meeting to increase transparency. Some members cautioned about pre-committing decisions outside public sessions and the policy committee was asked to draft language that ensures ratification in public meetings.
Both items will be refined for the second reading and the administration will provide further cost details and procedural recommendations to the policy and operations committees.
