Students from Kennett High School described hands-on internship experiences to the curriculum committee, and district staff outlined plans to expand pathways and dual-enrollment opportunities.
Students spoke about placements at the Kennett Library, the Rotary Club and M Davis and Sons Construction, describing responsibilities such as 3D printing, media production, social-media management, and event promotion. Several students said the internships provided practical experience and college credits for dual-enrollment classes: one student said, "I have accumulated 6 college credits," after taking Westchester University courses as part of dual enrollment.
Board members asked students whether expectations and communication with host organizations were clear. Students and staff acknowledged communication challenges with external hosts (school email limitations and contact logistics) and recommended improvements in onboarding and clearer expectations. Some students reported compensation this year or potential future compensation, contingent on external funding or grants.
Administrators said the pathways program is expanding: the district plans to grow internship/co-op participation to roughly 30–40 students in the fall and 60–70 by the following spring, and explore additional dual-credit courses (English, math, science and social studies) and partnerships with Temple University for course approvals. Staff thanked the first cohort and asked board members to support expanding employer partnerships and communications.
