Board asks administration for a presentation on concussion management after research review

A board member opened a discussion on concussion management during the Sept. 16 board meeting, summarizing recent research and urging the district to review whether current policies and practices adequately address long-term head-injury risks.

The board member cited research from University of Michigan Health and an April 2024 paper from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons about repeated head impacts and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), and framed the issue as a long-term concern rather than an immediate policy proposal. Administrators responded that the district follows school-code protocols for concussion identification, removal from play, medical clearance and reintegration; they offered to present a flowchart explaining what a concussed student can expect and to include the recently purchased helmet technology in that presentation.

Board members requested that administration provide the concise presentation at either the next work session or the next board meeting so members and community stakeholders can better understand current practice and any gaps between policy and implementation. The request will come back to the board as an informational presentation rather than an immediate change to policy.
