Bob Olson, a member of the Clay County Agricultural Fair board, told the County Commission the 2024 fair posted record attendance and program participation but that the fairgrounds face capacity and infrastructure strains.
Olson said the fair recorded 169,422 guests in 2024 (an 18% increase over 2023), a single‑day attendance record, 277 competitive 4‑H entries, 1,900 elementary students participating in ag venture field trips, and $650,000 raised for Clay County students through the youth livestock auction. The fair board credited more than 1,000 volunteers, sponsors, and cooperative county support for the event’s success.
At the same time, Olson said surveys and operational experience revealed “warning flags” including crowding and long lines that can harm visitor experience, and infrastructure failures during the event — specifically electrical and sewage problems. He disputed the idea that the fair “makes millions,” saying the organization is a nonprofit that pays about $325,000 annually for county services and often loses money on concerts and other attractions; proceeds go back into operating the fair and building a slim rainy‑day reserve.
Because the fairgrounds face both growing demand and aging infrastructure, the fair board requested that county staff and fair board representatives form a collaborative team to analyze options and propose solutions for improvements, maintenance strategies, and financial models. Commissioners responded favorably and directed staff to prepare a briefing and participate in a working group; staff agreed to prepare a joint brief for a future meeting.
Why it matters: The fair is a high‑profile annual event that draws regional visitors and generates charitable support for youth programs, but current operations face capacity constraints that could affect safety, visitor experience and future economic opportunity tied to tourism and event rentals.
What’s next: County staff and fair board will prepare a joint briefing and a proposed scope for a collaborative working group; the board requested staff provide numbers, the 2018 master plan and the draft 2022 market analysis as background for the discussion.
