Commission votes 3–2 to adopt 2023 holiday schedule; Good Friday not added countywide

The Clay County Board of County Commissioners debated whether to add Good Friday to the county’s 2023 holiday schedule before voting on Nov. 22. Clerk Green explained the clerk’s office currently observes Good Friday because it is recognized as a courts’ holiday, and several commissioners described concerns about the fiscal and staffing impacts for public safety and other 24‑hour services if the county added another paid holiday.

Commissioners asked staff to produce cost estimates for adding Good Friday and discussed floating personal days for employees with at least one year of service. Some commissioners said employees could use existing paid time off to observe religious holidays, while others urged caution about opening a path to additional holiday requests that could grow the schedule incrementally.

In the roll call on the holiday schedule as presented (with Good Friday left off), the motion passed by a 3–2 vote. Commissioners asked staff to return with cost data and options related to public‑safety overtime and the fiscal impacts of an additional paid holiday.
