Committee approves drafting concepts on wildfire management and riparian buffers; schedules next meeting

The Environment Committee approved two concept items to be drafted as raised bills: (a) "AAC wildfire responsive management" and (b) "AAC riparian buffers." Representative John Michael Parker called for the motion; Senator Lopes moved and Senator Harding seconded. The committee adopted both concepts by voice vote with no substantive debate.

Committee members also approved referrals of specific bills to other committees, including HB6256 to Transportation and HB5386 to Finance. Staff walked members through the process to add raised bills to the committee's electronic bill record book and to generate the bulletin notice for public hearings.

Chair Parker thanked the new clerk, Zeta Romero, "for managing a couple complicated roll calls right out of the gate." The committee recessed until 2:00 p.m. and the chair announced its next scheduled meeting for Wednesday, March 19 at 10:00 a.m. Staff were directed to confirm that all raised bills are present in the committee websuite and to finalize the bulletin for publication.

These drafting approvals do not represent final policy; they authorize staff to prepare bill language and to schedule public hearings where stakeholders can testify.
