Muhlenberg County board hears progress on Longest Elementary demolition, middle-school field house set to start in December

The Muhlenberg County Board of Education on its November regular meeting received detailed construction and facilities updates, including near-completion of Longest Elementary emolition and plans to build a new middle-school field house.

Construction staff reported that Longest Elementary demolition is complete except for a fuel tank that still needs removal; Green City Demolition is coordinating with a local firm to handle that disposal. Work on the Longest addition and other school renovations is advancing, with Summit and Codell preparing schedules to be shared with school administration next week.

The board heard that the middle-school field house project held a pre-construction meeting with CNC Contractors and site stakeholders; construction is slated to start in December with a target completion date around April 1 of next year. Staff said they will require fencing or barriers to keep students safe while work takes place and will coordinate school activities with the contractor to avoid conflicts.

Administrators also outlined additional planned upgrades: second-floor classroom renovations for the middle school (proposals being developed by Henson Construction), an ADA bathroom addition to a special-education classroom, and high-school restroom renovations that have not been updated since 1990. Henson has been asked to provide proposals and schedules for several of these projects.

Board members were told that the district is prioritizing contractors with strong schedules and on-time performance and that several projects were timed to occur during breaks or in summer windows to minimize instructional disruption.

No formal motions altering project scope or budgets were recorded during the update; staff said they will return with bids and completion schedules for board consideration.
