The Huron Board of Education on Feb. 10 approved a junior kindergarten program and a multi‑item consent agenda, then voted unanimously to enter executive session to discuss contract negotiations.
Chairman Jerome Bishop opened the meeting and, after adopting a revised agenda that added new hires and grant items, the board approved the consent agenda containing substitute hires, resignations, a 2025–26 contract for special‑education teacher Devon Urban, several grant intent filings (amounts listed in board materials ranged from $300 to $10,000) and the rehiring of administrators for 2025–26. A board member asked whether a $10,000 grant was tied to the middle school or to the high‑school renovation; staff replied the item appeared to be a “pretty small piece of equipment” and the specific building was not identified in the application.
The board then voted on a previously discussed junior kindergarten proposal. Dr. Steinhoff and Dr. DeBoer recommended approval; the motion was moved and seconded and passed unanimously.
Before adjourning to a brief recess and executive session, the board heard routine reports from administrators and the business manager about fiscal and construction matters. The board then voted, by roll call, to enter executive session under South Dakota Codified Law 1‑25‑2(4) "preparing for contract negotiations or negotiating with employees or employee representatives." Chairman Bishop stated there would be no business after the executive session.
