The Huron Board of Education highlighted student and staff accomplishments at its Feb. 10 meeting, including state honors for theater productions, community donations and a classroom music demonstration.
Dr. Steinhoff recognized theatre cast and crew members for receiving superior ratings and noted district recognition from the Associated School Boards of South Dakota. He thanked community partners for donations — including mittens and hats from First Congregational Church and oral‑health services and donations from Delta Dental — and mentioned a pilot fluoride screening program that reached 190 Buchanan K‑1 students.
During the board’s good‑news segment, Laura Beck introduced the fifth‑grade "Tiger Cub Band," describing rapid program growth to roughly 121 students (up from a typical ~100) and explaining the two‑times‑weekly group instruction plus weekly small‑group lessons. The students performed short selections and received praise from board members.
High‑school students Aurora and Kirsten presented for Educators Rising, describing service projects (Valentine goodie bags for Buchanan students), college learning expo attendance and plans to compete at the state conference in March. Advisor Brandy Fitzgerald was identified as the program sponsor.
The board commended the students and staff; members noted research linking music participation with improved academic outcomes and encouraged students to consider careers in education.
